Star Wars: Galactic Nights

Star Wars: Galactic Nights

It’s no secret that I love Star Wars, especially the sequel trilogy. I had even Disney bounded as Dapper Rey for Dapper Day. So when Disney announced a Star Wars: Galactic Nights event at Hollywood Studios, I had to go.

Before the new Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge land opened at Hollywood Studios, the most Star Wars we could get in the parks was the simple meet-and-greet area in Star Wars Launch Bay. To be honest, as much as I loved meeting Chewbacca and Kylo Ren, this was pretty weak. I was so stoked at the prospect of getting some Star Wars in the parks.

The first thing I had to do was plan out my outfit. My favorite Star Wars character is Ben Solo aka Kylo Ren, but he’s a boy character, and I wasn’t sure if I could pull it off. Then again, I successfully Disney bounded as Donald Duck just fine, so I figured I could pass as female Kylo Ren.

I found a Kylo Ren mask at a local flea market for super cheap, so I figured that was a sign. I then found a leather dress at Nordstrom Rack, and the outfit was starting to come together. I had knee-high black boots with heels, but I opted for my Tory Burch thigh-high riding boots because I figured it would be easier to walk around the park in flats, even if the knee-high heels looked better. I got a plastic toy Kylo light saber and inexpensive elbow-length leather gloves from eBay, and I finished the look with some messy hair and red lipstick.

Because I was pregnant, I couldn’t go on any rides, so I spent most of my time going around, taking photos and admiring everyone else’s outfits. My husband and my friend Joy went on the rides with practically no wait though. That’s the nice thing about going to Disney’s After Hours events or parties like this one. We also got to see a panel hosted by Warwick Davis, who is known for his several appearances in multiple Star Wars movies, starting with his role as Wicket in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. We even watched a live interview with Joonas Suotamo, aka the new Chewbacca.

The whole event was so much fun and totally worth the price. It wasn’t any more expensive than a regular After Hours event, and it had so much more to offer, especially for a Star Wars fan — between the panels, interviews, special photo areas, extra character meet-and-greets (like Rey and Darth Vader), and more. I would highly recommend it if they ever offer this again. And it would be even better now that Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is open. But if they don’t offer it again, then maybe I’ll try out either the holiday or the Halloween parties at Magic Kingdom next time.

Disney Bounding as Dapper Rey at Dapper Day

Disney Bounding as Dapper Rey at Dapper Day

As you might already know, I’m a huge Star Wars fan, and when The Last Jedi came out, I was obsessed with the idea of Reylo. Unlike my Donald Duck Dapper Day outfit where I picked the dress first and then the character, this time I knew exactly who I wanted to Disney bound as: Rey from the sequel trilogy of Star Wars.

I already had this Banana Republic dress in my closet for work, and I thought it would work perfectly as the base of my dapper Rey outfit because the shoulders reminded me so much of Rey’s vest while she’s on Ahch-To during The Last Jedi.

My Dapper Day outfit wound up being a bit of a combination of this outfit and her outfit during the throne room scene. When Rey and Kylo Ren / Ben Solo fight the praetorian guards, that is probably my favorite lightsaber battle in the entire Star Wars saga.

Check out that thigh grab for more Reylo proof.

To accessorize, I went with a grey fascinator that I thought went well with the shoulder detail, Rey’s signature fingerless grey gloves, and two criss-crossed grey scarves tied together with a brown belt. I was pregnant at the time, so the scarves helped to hide my growing bump.

I also weilded Kylo Ren’s red cross lightsaber, just like Rey did in the throne room scene when she tried to attack Snoke. And my red high heels and red lips were my finishing touches. Unfortunately, I couldn’t convince my husband to dress up as Kylo Ren / Ben Solo. But I get it. Dressing in all black from head to toe in the hot Florida sun isn’t exactly fun. So he went for a cruise ship Mickey look instead. I think he pulled it off. Technically, Rey and DCL Mickey both captain ships, right?

Now that our little one has arrived, we need to start brainstorming ideas for Disney bounding at the next Dapper Day (April 27 in Magic Kingdom and April 28 in Epcot). Let us know in the comments how you think the three of us should dress!

Disney World Dapper Day: Donald Duck Disney Bound

Disney World Dapper Day: Donald Duck Disney Bound

If you’ve never heard of Dapper Day, it’s really more like two different dapper weekends—two days in the spring and two days in the fall—in which people dress up in retro outfits like in the time of Walt. You see outfits from about the 1920s to about the 1950s, and they’re mostly fancy Disney bounds. Not sure what a Disney bound is? Check out this post.

While a lot of people like to pick out their characters that they want to Disney bound as ahead of time, I did things a little backward. I went to Nordstrom Rack to find a dress I thought could pass off as retro that would also be affordable but good quality. I figured I would find something that looked good on me and then decide which character I could Disney bound as after picking out the dress. After trying on several outfits, I found this beautiful Eliza J blue neoprene dress with bows on the shoulders.

I immediately thought of Disney bounding as Donald Duck, but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do it because he’s a boy character. I thought maybe village Belle or Dory or Sadness. But then my friend Suzy told me, “It’s definitely Donald. Stop trying to make it anything other than Donald.” And she was right. This dress definitely screamed Donald Duck.

Because I was going for a retro look, I wanted to get a fascinator or a pillbox hat to go with the dress, but my husband convinced me to go with a beret to make my Dapper Day outfit look more like Donald Duck.

To put the finish touches on my Donald Duck Disney bound for Dapper Day, I added white gloves, a red bow tie, a yellow belt, and red high heels. I would have worn yellow high heels if I owned them, but I didn’t and didn’t want to spend the money on them either. I bought a white feather boa (feathers because he’s a duck of course), but I unfortunately forgot to bring it with me to Disney World. I accessorized with white cat-eye sunglasses and a white parasol.

I must have done a good job with my outfit because the official Dapper Day Facebook page actually featured me. I was so excited! I couldn’t convince my hubby to dress as Daisy Duck, so he went for more of a Dapper Dan look with a pale blue pinstripe suit and a boater hat.

I wish that I got a photo with classic Donald, but we were at the Magic Kingdom Dapper Day, and classic Donald is at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. I did get a photo with Donald in his circus attire though, and he loved my outfit.

Probably the most exciting part of the day was telling Mickey Mouse that we were expecting a baby! This was when Mickey could still talk. It was great to be able to hear him tell us congratulations, and it makes me a little sad that Mickey can’t talk anymore.

So what do you think of my Donald Duck Dapper Day Disney bound? Who do you think I should Disney bound as at Dapper Day this year? Let me know in the comments! And be sure to follow me on Instagram for more Disney fun.

Moana Review

Moana Review

Have you seen the most recent Disney movie, Moana, yet? If not, you definitely should. It’s my new favorite. From the stunning animation to the catchy songs, Moana is an instant classic, and no one knows how far it’ll go.

History and Culture in Moana

The movie Moana takes bits and pieces from various Polynesian cultures including Samoa, Hawaii and New Zealand. And almost all of the voice actors are from these countries as well. For example, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (the voice of Maui) is part Samoan, Auli’i Cravalho (the voice of Moana) is Hawaiian, and Jemaine Clement (the voice of the crab Tamatoa) is from New Zealand. Because it’s a mashup of various cultures, it’s not 100% true to any one culture. Some people complained about Moana not being historically accurate, but come on, this is Disney. Did you see Pocahontas or Mulan? At least Moana isn’t based on a real person or historical character.

Maui, however, is based on a demigod from Polynesian culture. People are all up in arms because he’s “fat” and pompous and because Disney didn’t include his wife in the storyline. If you ask me, I think it’s refreshing that there is no love interest in Moana. It’s all about the strength she finds from within to help her people. Plus, I didn’t think Maui was fat but rather solid like a bodybuilder. When he flexes his muscles, you can tell that Disney was going for muscular rather than fat. All his accomplishments that Maui sings about in the “You’re Welcome” song are actually from folklore.

I killed an eel; I buried its guts. Sprouted a tree; now you got coconuts.

Another piece of historical significance in Moana is what’s known as “the long pause.” In fact, you could say this is what the whole movie was about. Polynesian people were voyagers and spent hundreds of years traversing the oceans and finding new islands. Then they stopped for about 2,000 years. I don’t think anyone really knows why. But then they started back up again like nothing happened and continued populating the rest of the south Pacific for hundreds more years. Moana discovers her ancestors were voyagers and sets forth on a quest to start voyaging again.

We were voyagers! Why’d we stop?

Review of Moana

When asked if we thought Moana was better than Frozen, I said yes but my sister said no. If you’re into sugar sweet and romance, then yes, Frozen was probably better. Princess Anna had TWO love interests. However, if you’re into empowering girls to stand up for themselves and be brave, then Moana was better. While Elsa may not have had a love interest, she was like the villain for half the movie. Moana doesn’t have a love interest and is strong and smart throughout the whole movie.

The music of Moana is just so darn catchy that even my husband (who hasn’t even seen the movie yet) loves the songs. We play them around our house all the time. I don’t think it’s possible for either one of us to say “thank you” without the other singing “You’re Welcome” back. And if anything is even remotely shiny, we have to sing “SHINY!”

I’ll never hide—I can’t! I’m too SHINY!

I think the animation in Moana is absolutely stunning, especially the vibrant colors and the way they animated the water. It’s just so breathtaking. I really wish Motunui was a real place so I could visit it!

Meet Moana at Disney World

Even though Moana doesn’t like it when Maui calls her a princess, as he pointed out, “if you wear a dress and have an animal sidekick, you’re a princess.” And just like all Disney princesses, there has to be a meet-and-greet area at Disney World. Moana is the only princess you’ll find at Disney’s Hollywood Studios because the rest take up residence in either Magic Kingdom or Epcot (or sometimes both). She’s located in the Walt Disney: One Man’s Dream attraction, which I think is a little odd placement, but I guess they had nowhere else to put her because half that park is under construction for Star Wars Land and Toy Story Land. Plus, Jasmine is already in Adventureland, and I can’t imagine anywhere else Moana would fit.

When you walk into Hollywood Studios, head to the right of the Great Movie Ride, past Star Wars Launch Bay and Voyage of the Little Mermaid. One Man’s Dream will be on your right. If you get to Toy Story Mania, you’ve gone too far. Once in One Man’s Dream, head all the way to the back to find Moana. I loved it when she showed me how to be a wayfinder!

Be Our Guest Restaurant

Be Our Guest Restaurant

entrance to be our guest

With the expansion of the new Fantasyland at Walt Disney World came new attractions and restaurants, including the Be Our Guest restaurant, named after the song from Beauty and the Beast. The theme of the restaurant is Beast’s castle, and it is absolutely gorgeous. Decor- and ambiance-wise, this is the most beautiful restaurant in all of Walt Disney World—yes, even more beautiful than Cinderella’s Royal Table in Cinderella Castle.

rose napkin

The first time I went to Be Our Guest was for breakfast, which is quick service. Even though it’s quick service, you still need to get reservations in advance. I was lucky enough to get last-minute reservations, most likely because someone else canceled that day, but that’s not usually the case. It’s better to book as soon as you can. However, if you can’t get in on the day you want, keep checking the My Disney Experience app every day because something may open up. For breakfast, you order from kiosks, get a plastic rose, and then your meal magically shows up at whatever table you pick to sit at. I ordered the egg whites, thinking I was going to be healthy. Ha! I should have known that’s never the case at Disney World. With breakfast came an array of delicious pastries, and the diet went completely out the window.

When I went for dinner with my husband, I booked six months in advance. That’s how quickly this restaurant gets booked up. We checked in at the front a little early, and the cast member said that they were running a little late. So he said we could either wait on the bridge (where they had free water, which was nice), or we could walk down to Gaston’s tavern and hang out in the air conditioning. I am SO GLAD we listened to him and went to Gaston’s tavern because not only was waiting in the air conditioning better than waiting in the hot Florida sun, but we also ordered a couple of LeFou’s Brews. This might now rival the Dole Whip for my favorite sweet treat at Disney World. It’s amazingly delicious. It’s like an apple cider slushy with a hint of marshmallow taste, topped with a passion fruit foam. I can’t even begin to describe how good it was. My husband said he liked it even more than the Dole Whip. It’s still a tight race for me.

be our guest ceiling

We got a text message to let us know that our table was ready at Be Our Guest, so we headed back. The cast member at the front of the castle handed me a Lumiere figurine to “help light the way” to our table. We were lucky enough to be seated in the ballroom, which looks exactly like the movie. It’s so opulent and gorgeous, and they even have the mural with cherubs on the ceiling. If you look out the “windows” in the back, it looks like it’s snowing outside. The other gorgeous room is the West Wing, which, again, looks just like the movie. It has the painting of Beast as a human (Prince Adam) that he clawed at as well as tapestries that had also been clawed. The coolest part of the West Wing is the enchanted rose. It really is just like you stepped into the movie.

be our guest steak

For dinner, I ordered the shrimp and scallops, and my husband ordered the steak. This also happens to be the only place in Magic Kingdom where you can have alcohol. Be Our Guest offers beer and wine, but only for dinner. (If you really need a drink, you can go to any of the other parks, or I’ll give you some tips in another post.) Both of our meals were superb. This may be my favorite sit-down restaurant at Disney World (at least for the restaurants that aren’t all-you-can-eat).

the grey stuff

Everything was so amazing that we couldn’t even imagine how delicious “the grey stuff” was going to be. In fact, the whole reason I even wanted to eat at Be Our Guest for dinner was so I could try the grey stuff. It comes from the line in the Be Our Guest song, “Try the grey stuff; it’s delicious. Don’t believe me? Ask the dishes!” Well, I hate to burst your bubble, but the dishes are liars. The grey stuff, while decent, was not great. I wouldn’t have called it super delicious. It tasted like Cool Whip—just Cool Whip with grey food coloring. Womp womp. My husband says that instead of asking the dishes, you should ask the steins. We both would have rather gone back to Gaston’s Tavern and had more LeFou’s Brew.

enchanted rose

After dinner, we had a chance to walk around and see more of the restaurant. The ballroom is definitely the best place to sit, but the West Wing is a close second. However, I would have been pissed if I had to sit in Belle’s picture room. It looked like they ran out of budget because they spent so much on making the rest of Beast’s castle look so incredible that they just slapped this room together with some pictures on the walls.

meeting the beast

We also had the chance to meet the Beast after dinner. All the cast members referred to him as “the master” and “our host for the evening,” which I thought was a nice touch. However, I think it would have made more sense if instead of the Beast, it was Prince Adam. A cast member happened to drop a dish while we were there, and I said to my husband that’s like murder if the castle is enchanted. He said that it’s not because the curse was broken, which is why all the servers are humans. I said that was a good point. But if the spell was broken, then why is the Beast greeting guests instead of Prince Adam? That’s a miss in my book. Also wish Belle could be there too, but I guess she’s over in the cottage for her Enchanted Tales.

be our guest menu

Overall, I highly recommend Be Our Guest for both breakfast and dinner. I can’t comment on lunch yet, but I assume it’s good. But opt for a different dessert than the grey stuff because that was a bit of a disappointment. I’m not saying it’s bad; I’m just saying there’s probably better options on the menu. It’s such a gorgeous restaurant with beautiful decor that it makes for great photo ops. There’s even a room with suits of armor that talk! Disney certainly knows how to pay attention to details.

The Best Places to Meet Mickey Mouse

The Best Places to Meet Mickey Mouse

If you’re only going to meet one character during your trip to Walt Disney World, it obviously has to be Mickey Mouse. He’s available for meet-and-greets at all four theme parks; however, not all meet-and-greets are created equally. Here’s a breakdown of the best places to meet everyone’s favorite mouse.

1. Magic Kingdom

So why is Magic Kingdom at the top of this list? It’s not just because you’re meeting Mickey in the happiest place on earth. It’s because…he talks. Yes, you read that correctly. Mickey Mouse talks when you visit him in Magic Kingdom. I honestly have no clue how this works, but it really freaked me out the first time, so I want you to be prepared. One time, the family in front of me told him they were from Mexico. “Oh, you’re from Mexico? ¡Hola!” And then when they were taking a photo, he said, “Say, ‘queso’!” And when I brought a friend’s two-year-old niece who was a little scared, he suggested that they act like choo-choo trains and marched along all over the room, yelling, “Chugga, chugga, choo choo!” Everything he says is in the Mickey Mouse voice, and his mouth moves in sync, and he blinks. It’s really wild to see. A very interactive experience!

2. Animal Kingdom

I actually flirted with the idea of making Animal Kingdom the best place to meet Mickey only because this is the only place where you can actually meet Mickey and Minnie at the same time and see them interact together with you. Being able to see Mickey and Minnie together and get a photo with both of them at once is almost unheard of at the other parks, which is why Animal Kingdom is one of my favorite places to meet Mickey. Also, the line seems to move the fastest, and you’re in air conditioning the whole time. All plusses in my book.

Mickey and Minnie at Animal Kingdom

3. Epcot

There’s nothing wrong with meeting Mickey at Epcot; it’s just not at the top of my list because Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom’s meet and greets are just that awesome. There’s nothing that really stands out about meeting Mickey at Epcot other than the fact you can knock out seeing several characters at once (i.e., you’ll see Minnie and Goofy there too). However, unlike Animal Kingdom, you can’t get your photo with all of these characters at the same time. While they are in the same room, you can only have your photo taken with one at a time. There is a tiny chance you might see the characters interact with each other though. This is also the only place you’ll see Mickey and the gang in their “normal” clothes (e.g., Minnie is in her red dress with white polka dots).

PhotoPass_Visiting_EPCOT_7513829015

4. Hollywood Studios

Hollywood Studios is my least favorite place to meet Mickey. The biggest reason is because the line to meet him is outside. While it’s covered so you’re at least in the shade, there’s really no getting away from the Florida heat and humidity. While you can meet Minnie at the same time, she’s in the first room, and then you have to walk to another room to meet Mickey. That makes for a nearly impossible chance to see them interact with each other. This also seems to be the slowest moving line. However, I really do love Mickey’s outfit and his room setup at Hollywood Studios.
